The region
The North East has County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and part of North Yorkshire, and two combined authorities: the North East Combined Authority and the Tees Valley Combined Authority. Its largest settlements include Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Gateshead, Darlington and Hartlepool. It is the least populous region of England, with a 2024 population of about 2.76 million.
