Security risks specific to construction
Plant, tools, fuel and metals such as copper cable are portable and valuable, and a single theft can delay a programme by days. The cost is rarely just the item: replacement lead times, insurance excesses and lost working time all add up.
Unauthorised access is the second concern. A site with open excavations, unfinished edges and stored materials is dangerous for trespassers, including children, and the liability sits with the principal contractor. Controlling who is on site, and when, is as much a safety measure as a security one.
Sites are also most vulnerable at predictable times: weekends, bank holidays and the quiet hours between shifts. Thieves watch for patterns, so cover that varies, for example static cover at known high-risk times with random patrols at others, tends to work better than a fixed routine.
Finally, security needs change through the project. Early groundworks, the structural frame, the weathertight shell and internal fit-out each present different assets and different weak points, so the plan should be reviewed at each phase.
How we approach construction security
We start with the programme and the layout: where the access points are, what is stored where, and when the site is empty. From that we recommend a mix of static guarding, access control and patrols, and agree gate procedures, sign-in requirements and reporting lines with your site manager.
Officers are SIA-licensed and BS 7858 screened, and are briefed on your site rules before their first shift. We keep licensed officers available for short-notice deployment, so if a break-in or a sudden change in programme leaves you exposed, we can discuss emergency cover straight away.
Construction in Teesside and the North East
Construction in our region is often large and long-running. Teesworks, on the former Redcar steelworks land, is described as Europe’s largest brownfield site and the main part of the Teesside Freeport, with projects such as the SeAh Wind factory for offshore wind turbine foundations and the Net Zero Teesside Power scheme. In Newcastle, Newcastle Helix is a 24-acre innovation district built by Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University on former industrial land. In Stockton, the Castlegate Centre was demolished in 2022 and 2023, leaving a town-centre redevelopment site.
These examples show how different the security problem can be. A very large brownfield site has long perimeters, heavy plant and many contractors. A city-centre site has public footfall alongside the hoardings. A cleared town-centre site draws trespassers precisely because it looks unattended. We plan access control, patrols and static posts around the type of site, not a standard package.
Before you hire security for a site
- Check what your insurer or principal contractor already requires for site security.
- Know when the site is empty: nights, weekends, bank holidays and gaps between trades.
- Decide how deliveries and contractors will be checked in and logged.
- Agree who the officer reports to and who to call out of hours.
- Plan to review cover at each major phase of the build.
If you are not sure what level of cover a site needs, describe it to us and we will give you a straightforward recommendation, including whether patrols alone would be enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you protect small building sites as well as large developments?
Yes. Cover can be scaled from a few patrol visits a week to full-time static guarding, depending on the size of the site and the risk. Tell us about the project and we will recommend what is proportionate.
Can your officers manage site access and deliveries?
Yes. Officers can check and log people and vehicles in and out in line with your site rules, helping with both security and health and safety.
What if we need cover starting tomorrow?
Call us. We run 24/7 operations and keep licensed officers available for short-notice deployment, and we will tell you honestly what we can staff and when.
