Security for Student Accommodation

Student accommodation brings together a lot of young people, many living away from home for the first time, in buildings with busy entrances and constant movement. MEHXIV supplies SIA-licensed officers who provide a welcoming but alert presence in halls and purpose-built student blocks.

Security issues in student accommodation

Tailgating and unauthorised entry are the most common concerns. Fire doors propped open, guests let in without checks and parcels left unattended make buildings less secure, and residents often have little experience of managing this themselves.

Noise, antisocial behaviour and party-related incidents are frequent, especially in term time at weekends and at the start of the year. A calm officer who knows the building can resolve many problems before they reach a formal complaint.

Resident welfare matters too. Students may feel vulnerable late at night, particularly if they are new to the area. A visible, approachable presence, and an easy way to ask for help, makes a real difference to how safe residents feel.

How we approach student accommodation

We discuss the building layout, entrances, resident numbers and the times you most need cover, then recommend a front-of-house presence, patrols or both. Officers are briefed on your rules for guests, noise and incidents, and report to your accommodation manager.

MEHXIV officers are SIA-licensed and BS 7858 screened, and clients can request female officers where that suits the building. We can also provide short-term cover for move-in periods and events, subject to availability.

Student accommodation in our area

The region has several universities that shape local housing demand: Teesside University and Middlesbrough College in Middlesbrough, Durham University’s Queen’s Campus on the south bank of the Tees at Stockton, and Newcastle University and Northumbria University in Newcastle. Purpose-built accommodation near these campuses has predictable pressure points: move-in week, the start of term and weekends.

We plan cover around those peaks, with a front-of-house presence at entrances where you need it, and patrols outside those times. Tell us how your building works and when problems arise and we will recommend a pattern that is proportionate.

Before you arrange student accommodation security

  • Identify the entrances and fire doors that are most often propped open or misused.
  • Know the times of greatest concern: weekends, term start and move-in periods.
  • Agree your guest, noise and visitor rules so that officers can apply them consistently.
  • Decide how residents can reach officers and report problems.
  • Plan how officers and your accommodation team will share information.

A conversation with your accommodation manager about the last term’s incidents is usually the best starting point. We will recommend a presence that suits the building and its residents.
