Key Holding and Alarm Response

When an alarm goes off at 3am, someone has to attend. If that person is you, it costs sleep and sometimes a long drive for a false alarm. MEHXIV offers key holding and alarm response from SIA-licensed officers: we hold keys securely, attend when your alarm activates, check the premises and report back, and we can also open and lock your site on a schedule.

What to agree before you hand over keys

Key holding depends on trust and procedure. We agree in advance who may authorise entry, how keys are stored and logged, what the officer should do on arrival, and who they should call. Your insurer may also have conditions for alarm response, so check your policy before you rely on any arrangement.

Alarm response is not the same as a monitored alarm. Your alarm company or monitoring station is responsible for receiving the signal and calling out a keyholder. Our role is to attend as the keyholder and check the site. We work with whatever monitoring arrangement you have.

False alarms are common. Having a licensed officer attend, check and report saves you the journey and leaves a record for your alarm company and insurer.

How deployment works

  1. Set-up

We record site details, alarm arrangements, access instructions, emergency contacts and what authority you give us.

  2. Key handover

Keys are logged and stored securely, and procedures are agreed in writing.

  3. Attendance

When your alarm activates, or on the agreed schedule, an SIA-licensed, BS 7858 screened officer attends.

  4. Report

You receive a report of what was found and what was done, so the record is clear.

Every officer we deploy holds a valid SIA licence and is screened to BS 7858. You are welcome to check any licence on the SIA public register of licence holders.

Setting up key holding properly

The agreement matters as much as the service. Write down who is authorised to instruct us, what an officer may do on arrival, whether they should enter the building or only check the exterior, who they should call and in what order, and how keys are stored and signed in and out. Review the arrangement whenever your premises, alarm company or contacts change.

Keep your alarm company informed. They need to know to call us as a keyholder, and your insurer may have requirements about who can hold keys and how quickly someone must attend. If your insurer has a specification, share it before we agree the service so that we can tell you honestly whether we can meet it.

Questions to ask any key holding provider

  • How are keys stored, labelled and signed out, and who can access them?
  • What exactly will an officer do on arrival, and when will they enter?
  • How do you work with my alarm monitoring company?
  • Will I receive a written report after every attendance?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a key holder do when an alarm goes off?

An officer attends the premises, checks the exterior and, where agreed, the interior, resets or secures the site as instructed, and reports what was found. They escalate to you or the emergency services if there is a problem.

Do you hold keys securely?

Keys are held under agreed procedures with a record of who holds them and when they are used. We will explain the arrangement in full when we set up your cover, so you know exactly how it works.

Can you open and lock my premises each day?

Yes, where agreed in advance we can open and lock your premises at set times. Tell us the site, times and access arrangements and we will confirm what we can provide.

Is this the same as a monitored alarm?

No. A monitoring station receives the alarm signal and calls out a keyholder. We act as the keyholder who attends and checks the premises, and we can work with your existing monitoring arrangement.

Do you cover alarm response at night?

Yes. We operate around the clock. Contact us with your site details and alarm arrangements and we will confirm how we would cover your location.
